BUSINESS NEWS

  • University Mall in South Burlington now closes at 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday instead of 7 p.m. while Sunday hours remain 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., following a Facebook announcement that has led local shoppers to suggest new stores.  NBC5
  • Pascolo Ristorante returned to its former cozy space at 83 Church St. on Jan. 2 after customers preferred the intimate venue over a larger Church-College location. Owner Jed Davis said many staff moved north as the restaurant now seats about 130 patrons.  Burlington Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local music fans in Burlington can look forward to 26 concerts spanning rock, pop, hip hop and more from early January to October. Highlights include Neko Case on Jan. 11 at the Flynn (downtown) and indoor and outdoor shows at other venues (across town), with more acts to be announced.  Burlington Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers will begin the session today in Montpelier with education reform as a top priority, as they plan a bill to limit excess spending and adjust school district boundaries. They will also work on housing, healthcare, and judicial issues during the session.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State officials want to extend a pilot logging program that funds flood-resistant infrastructure to manage extreme weather; the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation said the initiative began in July 2025, used $1 million, and faces a funding gap in 2026.  Vermont Public

HEALTH NEWS

  • Stephen Leffler has been named permanent CEO of UVM Health after serving as interim since October + he has already made leadership changes to curb high health care prices while ensuring patient services remain unchanged at the Burlington flagship center.  Vermont Public
  • After the CDC cut childhood vaccine recommendations from 17 to 11 shots, Vermont’s Health Department said families can still access vaccines today. Officials are working with legislators on bill (H.545) to secure coverage if federal guidance changes.  Vermont Public
  • Stephen Leffler has been appointed as CEO of UVM Health Network effective immediately and will continue as president of UVM Medical Center (replacing Dr. Sunny Eappen, who will assist until December). A 30-year veteran, he takes on the role as budget challenges press on hospital revenues.  NBC5
  • UVM Health named Dr. Stephen Leffler as its next CEO on Monday, Jan. 5. The former interim leader, who is a Vermont native and emergency room physician, will also serve as president while giving individual hospitals more autonomy to improve health care access & affordability.  Seven Days

  • Vermont high school sports fans can vote for the boys Athlete of the Week through 9 p.m. Thursday on burlingtonfreepress.com, and winners will be announced Friday; votes began Monday, Jan. 5.
