  • Community Bank is doubling donations to the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity’s Warmth Support Program dollar for dollar up to $25,000 until Feb. 28 to help families pay for heating fuel & essential services this winter.  Burlington Free Press

  • FOX Weather’s Ski House show aired from Sugarbush Resort on Jan. 7, with hosts Ian Oliver and Bayne Froney interviewing U.S. Ski Team champion David Babic and covering how Vermont’s weather affected skiing, cheese, and beer brewing.  Burlington Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seven students (including an aspiring firefighter, filmmaker, and marine biologist) are using VSAC guidance to turn educational goals into career achievements, proving that hard work and support pave the way for future success.  VTDigger
  • Middle schoolers at Crossett Brook Middle School in Duxbury learned ski safety during Ski Collision Prevention Month through a partnership between Ski Vermont and the Snow Angel Foundation, which featured Chauncy Johnson sharing his family's experience and urging safe skiing practices.  NBC5

  • Gov. Phil Scott delivered his State of the State address at the Montpelier Statehouse on Wednesday, Jan. 7 and urged lawmakers to advance sweeping education reform prompted by Act 73 while cautioning they would face hard choices for the upcoming 2027 budget amid uncertain federal support.  VTDigger
  • Vermont State Treasurer Mike Pieciak will discuss the ArrayRX program today at 11:45 a.m. in the Cedar Creek Room at the State House — a free tool that lets residents save on prescription medications.  NBC5

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Red Cross—partnering with the NFL—is accepting blood donations through Jan. 25 for a chance to win a fully paid Super Bowl trip and a $1,000 gift card. Blood drives will be held in Rutland, Killington, and Stockbridge.  NBC5
  • After the CDC moved six vaccines from its recommended list, Vermont health officials affirmed their current childhood immunization schedule and aim to pass bill H.545 to secure vaccine access and insurer coverage for children (relying on trusted scientific guidance).  VTDigger
  • UVM Health today named Stephen Leffler as its CEO after he served as interim leader since October, replacing Sunny Eappen. Leffler, a longtime leader at the Medical Center, will also remain president of the institution.  Burlington Free Press

  • Vermont’s Ryan McLaren was named High Fives Foundation’s 2025 Athlete of the Year on Jan. 7 in Reno. The Essex Junction native honored for his adaptive sports leadership will run in the Boston Marathon in April (after recovering from a skiing injury).  Burlington Free Press
