  • Dear Lucy, the popular shoe and handbag boutique on Church Street Marketplace will close in the coming weeks, as a sale offering merchandise at 50-75% off begins today. The store will continue online and at its Mount Pleasant location (its founder explained the changes were due to evolving market challenges).  NBC5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gas prices in New England fell to $2.85 per gallon on Monday — a decrease from last week’s $2.87 — and remain about 1.9% higher than the national average.  Burlington Free Press
  • Unemployment claims in Vermont fell to 518 for the week ending Jan. 3, down from 914 the previous week, according to the Labor Department report published Thursday, Jan. 8 - while overall U.S. claims rose to 208,000.  Burlington Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Registration for Community Sailing Center's youth camp lottery is open until Jan. 12 with a waitlist email coming between Jan. 20 and Jan. 22; camp selections will be emailed from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2 (general registration starts Feb. 3 for those not selected).  Burlington Free Press
  • The Colchester School District cancelled classes yesterday at Colchester High, Colchester Middle and Mallett's Bay Middle after a water main break along Lakeshore Drive cut water in parts of town — forcing early dismissal and bus rides for students while other schools stayed open.  NBC5
  • Joe Clark became the new permanent superintendent for South Burlington School District after serving as interim since Sept. 12, effective Jan. 1 — his four-year contract starts at a $200K salary.  Burlington Free Press
  • The Snow Angel Foundation is touring Vermont to teach ski and snowboard safety through February, hosting on-snow sessions at local resorts including Stratton Mountain Resort, Magic Mountain, Burke Mountain, and Killington to boost awareness on the slopes.  Burlington Free Press
  • Burlington organizations are offering free assessments, classes, and workshops to help drivers understand their car repairs (service manager Nya Key at Girlington Garage explains the goal is clear, shame-free options), while also providing targeted support for women and minorities.  NBC5
  • On Thursday, three members of the school redistricting task force briefed lawmakers after Gov. Phil Scott’s education-focused address; they outlined new mapping proposals while noting some school districts reported staff concerns (including potential job impacts) as task force co-chairs favored a voluntary merger model.  NBC5
