CULTURE NEWS

  • ZZ Top and George Thorogood & the Destroyers will perform at Champlain Valley Fair on Friday, Sept. 4 in Essex Junction; tickets go on sale Jan. 29 via the fair website.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Some Vermont towns face a salt shortage before the cold, snowy weekend. In Rutland, Middlebury, Monkton and Vergennes, officials have scaled back ice removal and will treat main streets with salt while using sand on side roads, urging drivers to exercise extra caution until supplies are restocked.  Vermont Public

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today's dangerous wind chill and below-zero temperatures are prompting Vermont Health Department officials to warn residents about frostbite risks, with Titus Mountain closing for the weekend to keep visitors safe. Those with ski reservations will be refunded or able to reschedule, officials said.  NBC5

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Burlington residents are shopping for top-rated coats and waterproof boots as a severe winter storm that started Friday continues through the weekend. Local and national retailers offer online ordering with same-day pickup (a fast way to stay warm and safe in freezing conditions).  Burlington Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, Jan. 23, UVM women’s hockey extended its streak and the basketball team marked a win, while men’s hockey fell to UMass. Today, games include men’s basketball at 1 p.m, women’s basketball at 2 p.m, women’s hockey at BU at 4 p.m and men’s hockey at 7 p.m.  Burlington Free Press
  • Local ski resorts including Sugarbush, Smugglers' Notch, Jay Peak and Stowe Mountain continue operating this weekend amid extreme cold. Some adjustments are in place (Sugarbush will stop its Slide Brook Express Quad below -5°F and Smugglers' Notch will run modified hours) but officials expect steady visitor turnout.  Burlington Free Press
  • Vermont women's basketball point guard Catherine Gilwee was ruled out for the season on Jan. 23 due to a left foot injury and is seeking a medical redshirt to preserve her eligibility; the Catamounts (tied atop America East) continue their strong campaign.  Burlington Free Press
