COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Franklin County Field Days returns this summer from July 30 to Aug. 1 at a new venue behind Tractor Supply on Hubbard Lane in St. Albans. Organizers said last year’s event was canceled due to permitting issues and they plan to host the fair again.  NBC5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Smugglers' Notch Resort in Jeffersonville will soon complete a collaborative ownership transition with Bear Den Partners as the Stritzler family remains involved (Lisa Stritzler will advise the new team). The deal, meant to preserve local ownership, has undisclosed terms and no set timeline.  NBC5
  • The family-owned Smugglers’ Notch Resort in Jeffersonville was sold to Bear Den Partners on Wednesday—ending 29 years of ownership by the Stritzler family—with plans to invest in lifts, snowmaking and new trails to keep the resort family-friendly.  Seven Days

CULTURE NEWS

  • Burlington High School students have created the exhibit Legacy and Light, celebrating Black history, which is on view at City Hall through March 31; the Burlington School District’s Office of Equity will host a free public reception on Feb. 15 (1 to 4 p.m.) in Contois Auditorium.  Burlington Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UVM has named Dain LaRoche as dean of its College of Nursing and Health Sciences; he will begin on July 1. LaRoche, a Vermont native and former associate dean at UNH (where he oversaw a $30 million research portfolio), brings extensive experience in innovative health care research.  Burlington Free Press
  • Residents in Calais and Worcester voted against closing their local elementary schools amid consolidation plans for the Washington Central Unified School District. Officials will adjust the fixed $43m budget (cutting services and merging grades) to spread resources among the five schools.  VTDigger

SPORTS NEWS

  • Vermont native Ryan Cochran-Siegle won his second Olympic silver medal in the super-G race on Feb. 11 at Bormio. Inspired by his mother Barbara’s 1972 gold medal win, he carried Vermont pride as his local ski academy in Stowe celebrated his achievement.  Vermont Public
