EDUCATION NEWS

  • State education officials say school spending appears $36 million lower than predicted, leaving Burlington school boards unsure if Gov.   • Lawmakers in Vermont are considering two bills that would set rules for large data centers — one bill requires environmental safeguards and proper siting while the other may impose a moratorium until regulators study the impacts.   • Burlington council paused accepting a $20,000 sculpture offered by the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi to replace the former Chief Greylock statue in Battery Park on Feb. 24 — officials cited concerns over the group's legitimacy.  Burlington Free Press

  • High school sports fans can vote until 9 p.m. Thursday on burlingtonfreepress.com for the Girls Athlete of the Week powered by Delta Dental, with nominees including Calleigh Bruyns in hockey, Acadia Enman & Mary Harrington in Nordic skiing, Lydia Ruggles in gymnastics, and Hannah Spencer in basketball.   • RunVermont is seeing more runners in their 20s sign up for the M and T Bank Vermont City Marathon and Relay with about 1,000 registered and 55% of first-timers under 30 — executive director Anthea Dexter-Cooper said the trend bodes well as the race is scheduled in three months.  NBC5
  • Reese Gregory led No. 6 Essex to a 56-51 overtime win over No. 11 South Burlington in the D-I playdowns on Tuesday (Feb. 24).  Burlington Free Press
  • Mount Mansfield girls clinched their second straight Division I Nordic skiing title yesterday at Craftsbury Outdoor Center. The team won individual and relay races, earning its fifth crown since 2015 as it finished ahead of St. Johnsbury and other competitors.  Burlington Free Press
