BUSINESS NEWS

  • Beta Technologies will test its electric aircraft in Vermont this summer as part of a federal pilot program; the company will partner with Metro Aviation to move medical equipment across Lake Champlain (a key step toward FAA certification).  Vermont Public

CULTURE NEWS

  • Indie folk group The Head and the Heart will play Waterfront Park on Aug. 1 to celebrate their debut album's 15th anniversary. Rock band Alabama Shakes will perform at Shelburne Museum on Sept. 6 as part of the Ben + Jerry's Concerts on the Green series, with tickets available March 13.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vermont State University announced that Sherry Kollmann, formerly of New Mexico State University Global Campus, will become president for its five campuses (Castleton, Johnson, Lyndon, Randolph and Williston) at the end of the academic year, and she aims to boost enrollment and expand online and in-person offerings.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • River levels on Vermont waterways peaked at 12 feet last weekend because of ice jams and rapid snowmelt; although they receded Monday, localized flooding still poses a risk today. A storm system will bring rain Wednesday into Thursday, and Flood Safety Awareness Week (Mar. 8-14) offers resources for residents.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TSA officers at Leahy Burlington International and Rutland Southern Vermont Regional Airports have not received paychecks this week due to a funding lapse, and union leader Cody Putnam said the delay is causing financial strain while community support efforts continue. Officers expect back pay once the issue is resolved.  NBC5

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new recovery shelter in Burlington will open Monday with 12 beds and on-site support for those recovering from substance use disorder. The program provides each client with a personalized recovery plan + counseling, support groups, and help finding stable housing and jobs.  NBC5
  • The Green Mountain Care Board is drafting rules that will require hospitals to charge private insurers 1% less in 2027; hospital leaders say rising labor costs and fixed contracts may make balancing budgets challenging.  Vermont Public

SPORTS NEWS

  • More than 150 athletes from across the state compete in the Winter Special Olympics at Haystack Mountain in Wilmington today as part of a two-day event that includes alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. The games promote athleticism, competition, and community.  NBC5
  • High school sports fans can vote for the Vermont Varsity Insider Boys Athlete of the Week powered by Delta Dental until 9 p.m. Thursday via (burlingtonfreepress.com); winners will be announced on Friday and you can submit nominations for future ballots by email.  Burlington Free Press
  • Local high school sports fans can vote for the Girls Athlete of the Week powered by Delta Dental until 9 p.m. Thursday by casting ballots on the Burlington Free Press website.   • Landgrove native Ben Ogden won two silver medals in men's cross-country skiing at the Olympic Games in Italy last month and ended a 50-year drought for American men — his victory shows his lifelong dedication to the sport.  NBC5
