CULTURE NEWS

  • Dave Jennings, a 23-year-old Vermonter and first lieutenant in the Korean War, mailed his last letter from Hill +930 early on Dec. 7, thanking his family before a telegram confirmed his death. His preserved letters at UVM’s Silver Special Collections Library give a heartfelt glimpse of his courage.  VTDigger
  • This week, Young Writers Project (YWP) in Burlington features Carly Stone, 17, from Springfield with her piece 'The Cellphone Between You and Me' paired with Abigail Balon’s artwork 'A Desk Less Cluttered' from Panton. The online platform showcases teen writing and art weekly.  VTDigger

  • Today is Freedom of Information Day and the start of Sunshine Week, a time to support open access to public records. VTDigger is asking for donations to sustain its investigative reporting in Vermont (protected under state and federal law), ensuring the public's right to know.  VTDigger

  • Vermont Green FC, Burlington’s semi-pro club, will host Portland Hearts of Pine in the U.S. Open Cup first round tomorrow at 7 p.m. at UVM's Virtue Field, marking their first game back since winning the USL2 championship last August.  Vermont Public
  • Hartford High School captured its third consecutive Division II girls hockey championship on Sunday, March 15 at the University of Vermont’s Gutterson Fieldhouse (with eighth graders playing key roles) as goalkeeper Aubree Grambling made 29 saves and Johanna Kissell scored a hat trick in a 5 to 1 win.  Burlington Free Press
  • Coach Alisa Kresge said Vermont women's basketball earned a 14-seed for March Madness after a strong season. She noted the seeding rewards players' hard work as they prepare to compete (a milestone for the team).  Burlington Free Press
  • Harwood scooped its second straight Division II state boys hockey crown with a 4-3 win over U-32 after Milo Lavit scored a double overtime goal on Sunday, March 15 at Gutterson Fieldhouse.  Burlington Free Press
  • Yesterday, Division I championship games took place at UVM's Gutterson Fieldhouse with the girls final at 11 a.m. between BFA-St. Albans and Essex and the boys final at 1 p.m. between Rice Memorial and Burr and Burton. Live updates were available on the NFHS Network.  Burlington Free Press
  • No. 14 Vermont women's basketball will face No. 3 Louisville in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, March 21 at KFC Yum! Center. The Catamounts say their six-player rotation must avoid foul trouble and share scoring to challenge Louisville’s high-scoring attack (a key factor against the ACC team).  Burlington Free Press
  • Vermont Paralympian Spencer Wood from Pittsfield competed in Italy’s Winter Games this month and said the events have been the best time of his life. He plans to return home soon, marry, care for his pets, and volunteer with Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports (his next chapter).  VTDigger
