COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Burlington International Airport is hosting a food drive for TSA agents and families — local t-ball coaches and community volunteers — who are struggling with missed pay due to a government shutdown. The drive accepts non-perishable items and $20-or-less gift cards from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily until Washington reaches a deal.  NBC5
  • Sugar makers are opening their doors for Maple Open House Weekend on March 21-22 (tours, syrup tastings, and breakfast offerings are available) as March warmth sets in. Locals can sample maple products and learn about production while supporting a scholarship contest due April 8.  Burlington Free Press
  • Shelburne firefighters rescued a raccoon Tuesday after it got a peanut butter jar stuck on its head 25 feet in a tree. The team used a ladder and snare to free the animal (a reminder to secure food containers) during the call.  NBC5

  • Vermont-born musician Noah Kahan announced on Instagram Monday that his Netflix documentary, Noah Kahan: Out of Body, will release on Apr. 13, just before he drops his new album & offers a personal look at his creative journey and family moments.  Burlington Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife reports bears are coming out of hibernation and advises residents to bear-proof yards — removing bird feeders, securing garbage, and safeguarding pets. Experts say bear numbers have grown over the past five years and ask anyone witnessing dangerous behavior to report it online.  NBC5
  • A moderate solar storm from March 16 may spark northern lights tonight in Burlington if skies remain clear. The best view is expected between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. (cloudy conditions could hinder the display).  Burlington Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Vermont Green FC won its first-round U.S. Open Cup game 1-0 at a sold-out Virtue Field on Tuesday, March 17, when David Ismail scored the only goal. The team will face a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the second-round match scheduled for March 31 & April 1.  Burlington Free Press
  • The 40th annual Rotary All Star Classic will showcase top high school hockey seniors on Saturday, Mar. 21 at Essex Skating Facility. Games start at 4 p.m. for girls & 6 p.m. for boys, with $10 tickets benefiting food pantries, winter coats for kids, scholarships, and community programs.  Burlington Free Press
  • The Vermont Basketball Coaches Association named Pascal Munezero from Rice Memorial and Charlotte Jasmin from Hartford players of the year for 2025-26 yesterday — it will honor awardees at an all-star senior game Saturday, March 21 at Windsor High School, with rosters released later.  Burlington Free Press
