  • The first annual World Down Syndrome Day Sock Hop will begin today at Delta Hotel South Burlington at 5:30 p.m.—DJ Jim Provost’s music, catered food and a photo booth are part of the event organized by the Champlain Valley Down Syndrome Group Board to celebrate inclusion and raise awareness for Down syndrome.  VermontBiz

CRIME NEWS

  • In a Burlington courtroom, Berk Eratay testified that Serhat Gumrukcu led the 2018 murder-for-hire plot that killed Gregory Davis over a failed oil deal—Eratay, who admitted his role in the plan, is now cooperating with prosecutors as the trial continues.  VTDigger
  • Police in Winooski are seeking help in locating 68-year-old Debra Cardinal, who has not been heard from since Monday—her family said she suffers from mental health issues and reported her missing.  MyChamplainValley.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marlene Tromp, Ph.D. was named the 28th president of UVM by its Board of Trustees today+ she will formally assume the role later this summer and brings over 30 years of experience from her current post at Boise State University.  VermontBiz

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Burlington officials sent a letter to Governor Scott on March 20 urging him to sign the compromise Budget Adjustment Act to keep vulnerable households stably sheltered through June 30—this comes as data show that about 250 people sleep outside nightly and 83 households (including families and children) will exit the motel program on April 1. City leaders stress that without a stable shelter option, municipal resources will continue to be stretched amid rising homelessness.  VermontBiz
  • Chittenden County senators Kesha Ram Hinsdale, Thomas Chittenden, and Virginia 'Ginny' Lyons held a virtual town hall over the weekend to meet with constituents and discuss education reform, property taxes, and healthcare. They reviewed proposals like consolidating school districts into five regions—while noting that a paced approach is needed to avoid friction in Vermont schools.  The Citizen
