ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Perry Thornley, 61, was found unresponsive near Battery Park in January and later died from hypothermia — an autopsy released Wednesday confirmed that exposure coupled with acute ethanol intoxication led to his death.  Vermont Public

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bear Den Partners is merging its four New England ski resorts by forming the Bear Den Mountain Alliance. The group, which owns Burke Mountain and Smugglers’ Notch, will join them with Massachusetts properties Catamount and Berkshire East (CEO Jon Schaefer said it will secure the resorts’ future).  NBC5
  • Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen launched the Free Ben & Jerry’s campaign to reclaim the iconic ice cream maker from its corporate owners after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned amid disputes.   • The James Beard Foundation announced Vermont’s six semifinalists for its 2026 awards, honoring notable chefs, restaurateurs and a cocktail professional.   • In Cabot, maple syrup makers are using migrant workers through the H-2A visa program to meet rising demand from an operation now tapping 18,000 trees. The new hires (led by Ricardo Graham) help extend seasonal production through May.  Seven Days

  • Lawmakers reviewed a report by the Agency of Education on problems with Vermont's school transportation system. The report noted shortages of bus drivers, rising costs, and service inconsistencies that may affect student attendance as officials plan to reform funding.  VTDigger
  • Deb Sigel, a Shelburne resident and former NASA engineer, led a free Take Apart workshop at Pierson Library on March 25 where kids learned to safely dismantle everyday appliances — a program she started 16 years ago to spark interest in engineering.  Seven Days
  • Alison Novak, a longtime education reporter known for covering key public school challenges, was named Reporter of the Year by the New England Newspaper & Press Association on March 14 in Portsmouth, highlighting her in-depth work on education and childcare in the region.  Seven Days
  • Saint Michael’s College has launched a two-year co-op program that connects high-achieving juniors and seniors with paid, 20-hour-a-week local jobs while they remain enrolled in classes, as part of a partnership with the Lake Champlain Chamber to boost Vermont’s workforce pipeline.  NBC5

  • More than 10,000 fans entered a new ticket lottery for 2,500 seats after Vermont Green FC’s upset win over a Portland pro club; the team will face Westchester next Wednesday—Wed., Apr. 1 at 7 p.m.—at Virtue Field.  NBC5
  • Mikaela Shiffrin won her overall Alpine women’s World Cup title in Hafjell on Wednesday and Jessie Diggins claimed her fourth overall title in Lake Placid; a hometown hero celebration in Stowe is scheduled for April 11 + a fundraiser at Bromley Mountain Resort is set for April 12.  VTDigger
