  • A recent SmartAsset study finds Vermont households earning between $55,153 and $165,460 qualify as middle class, placing the state 19th nationally. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Vermont Gov. Phil Scott signed law H.545 to ensure access to needed vaccinations after CDC cut some pediatric vaccines from its list. The law offers scientifically supported vaccine recommendations + legal protections for healthcare providers while setting a method for the state to purchase unavailable vaccines.  NBC5
  • At Burlington International Airport, TSA workers are nearing their eighth week without pay amid a partial government shutdown—officials confirmed the airport remains open while a donation drive has collected over 200 pounds of food to support affected workers.  NBC5
  • Burlington city leaders are launching a Problem Property strategy to revive over 30 empty or damaged sites, including former Bove’s Restaurant on Pearl Street, by reviewing redevelopment plans in the coming months (aiming to add housing and revitalize neighborhoods).  NBC5
  • Vermont state leaders introduced bill H.577 to join ArrayRx for a free prescription discount card program (designed to lower costs without raising taxes and potentially save the state over $20 million annually). The measure now heads to the Senate for consideration.  NBC5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Burlington officials said that Perry Thornley, 61, died from hypothermia in Battery Park on Jan. 8 — his body temperature was 59°F when he reached the hospital and alcohol use was noted as a contributing factor.  Seven Days
  • Swanton’s health officer Suzie Kelleher issued an emergency public health order on March 26 after toxic vermiculite insulation was found at a fire-damaged property on Liberty Street; residents within 100 ft must keep windows closed (the sidewalk is also shut for cleanup).  NBC5

  • Tennis coach Jake Agna and historic athlete Fenwick Watkins will join the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame induction class at a banquet at the Delta Marriott Burlington Hotel in South Burlington on Saturday, April 25, featuring a 5:30 p.m. reception and partly supporting Prevent Child Abuse Vermont.  Burlington Free Press
  • Vermont natives Cornell's Giovanni DiGiulian (a South Burlington native and son of a local coach) and Bruins fourth-round draft pick Quinnipiac's Elliott Gorenewold are competing in the NCAA men's ice hockey tournament; Quinnipiac recently won 5-2 over Providence and Cornell will face Denver on Friday.  NBC5
