Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 28th of March.
Good morning, Burlington.
Evergreen Family Health sued the Bank of Burlington in state court after a fraudster drained $270,000 from its account on January 14—claiming the bank failed to flag suspicious transfers and misrepresented key details in its report.
The practice said it chose the bank for its fraud protection plan and that the lender did not reimburse the loss as required.
Kelsey Rice said that the VINELink system failed when she received a late robotic call about her abuser, who was supposed to be kept away—state workers and advocates now urge lawmakers to fix these errors so victims get timely, accurate updates.
Average gasoline prices in Burlington stayed stable at $3.16 per gallon today, down 2.9 cents from last week and 18.4 cents lower than a year ago.
In Vermont, prices averaged $3.11 per gallon — the lowest were in Rutland and Windham counties while Essex, Grand Isle and Lamoille counties reported the highest.
Volunteer mentors are needed to guide local youth who face challenges from social media and fewer in-person spaces.

Applications open this spring and selected teams will attend workshops in Randolph this summer—receiving mentorship and funding to put their plans into action.
The Senate approved an amended S.71 on January 9 that sets basic data privacy rights for Vermonters but removed the private right of action that contributed to last year’s failure—Sen. Robert Plunkett explained the change aligns with Gov. Scott’s preference for mirroring Connecticut’s law.
Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark urged 23andMe customers to protect their genetic data by using the website’s option to permanently delete it after the company entered bankruptcy and is seeking a buyer.
She stressed that personal biometric data should remain under individual control to avoid being sold in the bankruptcy process.
UVM Medical Center in Burlington proposed paying $38 million next year as a compromise with state health care regulators—$11 million for primary care providers, $12 million for BlueCross BlueShield, and up to $15 million for consultants—after exceeding its agreed revenue last year. The proposal will let the hospital avoid enforcement actions while it gets more time to reduce past overages and is open for public comment before a board vote next week.
UVM Cancer Center will host its second annual fashion show on Saturday, April 12 at the Higher Ground Ballroom in South Burlington where 35 nurses and some patients will walk the runway wearing altered chemo gowns to raise funds for cancer care.
Ticket sales, a raffle, and a silent auction will aim to raise $10,000 to support the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge and Road to Recovery program — following last year’s $6,200 raised.
