Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 31st of March.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local Burlington business owners said the ongoing Main Street project has hurt their sales, though city workers note that the upgrades to roads and water systems are needed for long-term safety. At a March 28 meeting, about 60 people asked many questions, and officials vowed to work with shop owners as construction continues.  Burlington Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chris Bohjalian, a well-known Vermont author, released his 25th novel, The Jackal’s Mistress, in March; the Civil War-set book is inspired by an 1869 account of a wounded union soldier cared for by a Confederate wife. In an NBC5 In Depth interview, he talked about his long career & changes in publishing that help him create new work.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The House Education Committee voted 7–4 on H.454—a bill that restructures Vermont’s education system by consolidating school districts, setting minimum class sizes and tightening rules for independent schools to receive public tuition—and approved changes to the State Board of Education that let the Legislature appoint two members while the Governor retains six. Lawmakers spent six hours reviewing constitutional issues before choosing the version they expect will survive a veto.  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new UVM study found that fallen logs in streams stored a lot of carbon, with logs from old trees holding four to five times more carbon than logs from mature forests and showing 50 to 60 percent more carbon than wood on the ground. Researchers surveyed 4,500 meters of headwater streams at Hubbard Brook and in the Adirondacks and said the growing carbon pool could guide future land-use plans for Vermont forest owners.  VermontBiz
  • An ice storm struck several Vermont counties last Sunday, leaving over 14,000 customers without power—utility crews worked hard to restore service. In Shoreham a fallen tree knocked out power for the Benoit family and neighbor Doug Patterson said he had never seen so much ice on trees.  NBC5
