ECONOMY NEWS

  • State & industry officials addressed trade students at Vermont State University in Randolph on Thursday, urging students to join manufacturing and trades amid staffing challenges from a declining workforce. The Vermont Department of Labor reported a 2.6% unemployment rate and nearly 8,000 fewer employees last year.  NBC5

  • Communities across Vermont are preparing for Green Up Day on Saturday, May 2 (with schools, businesses, and local groups joining) to clean trash and litter that became more visible after last year's floods and droughts.   • Health officials say the 'Cicada' COVID variant (BA.3.2) has been detected in Vermont, including Burlington, as testing and wastewater data show ongoing spread. They advise anyone testing positive to isolate until symptoms improve.  Burlington Free Press

  • Three dogs are looking for new homes in Burlington today: two-year-old Beowulf at the Humane Society of Chittenden County, three-year-old Zelda at the North Country SPCA, and rescued two-year-old Latte at Windham County Humane Society (an older dog, Jasper, recently found a forever home).  NBC5
