CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday, April 5, at 4:30 p.m., a former employee stabbed chef Robert Barral, 71, at Café Provence in Brandon before fleeing in his pickup truck; state police later arrested Jozef I. Eller in Rochester at 10:10 p.m. and he is set to appear for arraignment at 12:30 p.m. Monday in Rutland while Barral received treatment at a hospital and is stable.  VermontBiz
  • Vermont State Police investigated a hit-and-run in Brownington Saturday night that left 64-year-old Ricky Laprade of Derby in critical condition after he was struck along Route 5A—broken car parts pointed to a damaged black 2015-17 Subaru WRX.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermont’s Agency of Natural Resources plans to address beaver-induced dam blockages at up to 25 state-owned dams by considering options such as trapping beavers, modifying dams, or removing less useful structures to meet new safety rules passed since 2018. Two public meetings are scheduled—one on April 8 in Montpelier and one on April 10 in Middlebury—where engineers and biologists will explain the plans and answer resident questions.  VTDigger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Burlington Fire Chief Michael LaChance announced he will retire effective June 30 after serving 26 years including two years as chief. The City will announce next steps for the Fire Department leadership transition in early May.  VermontBiz
  • Lawmakers proposed a bill that would give employees two weeks of unpaid leave after a family death and 12 weeks of safe leave after domestic or sexual violence (this rule applies to employers with 10 or more workers). The bill also expands the idea of family to include other relationships and was sent to a Senate committee after passing the House in March.  VermontBiz
  • The Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center announced a grant that offers funds between $10,000 - $50,000 for dairy processors and brands to hire marketing experts, with applications due May 8th at 2pm EST. The Agency will hold listening sessions in Orleans, Caledonia, and Essex counties today and tomorrow, a workshop at Covered Bridge Farm will show new dairy strategies on April 25th, and a sawmill in Albany switched to a three-phase electric system to cut about 13,000 gallons of diesel use each year.  VermontBiz
