COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Williston Community Food Shelf is serving 450 families a month, doubling its reach over two years. Volunteers pick up donations almost daily from community partners like Hannaford & others to support 1,300 people amid changes to SNAP rules.  NBC5
  • Better in Boots Line Dancing raised funds for UVM Children's Hospital at Friday's event at Old Lantern Inn and Barn in Charlotte. Krystal Larose said her team danced to support the Big Change Roundup campaign and will deliver a donation check on May 1.  NBC5
  • Hubbard Park in South Burlington will get a modest makeover as the city plans to add a paved shared-use path and repave the gravel parking lot with 18 new parking spots (including accessible spaces) in the coming months.  Burlington Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Delta Park in Colchester is a 55-acre natural area hosting rare bird habitats and ecosystems — including a sandy beach for turtles — established during Vermont’s 1970s environmental movement; it remains open from dawn to dusk and is easily reached via Burlington’s bike path today.  Burlington Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A coalition of 16 local organizations seeks ($5 million) to train benefit assisters who help Vermonters keep food and health coverage as new federal work rules cut benefits for some households. Lawmakers will consider the proposal during upcoming budget talks.  VTDigger
  • Lawmakers advanced S.218 Friday—a bill to reduce road salt use and protect water quality by establishing best practices and certifications that limit liability. The House Ways and Means Committee also sent an education reform bill to Appropriations, outlining plans for school mergers, construction aid and prekindergarten funding.  VTDigger
  • Vermont law does not ban wearing headphones while driving but cautions that negligent use can result in penalties. Drivers 18 and older may use hands-free devices (younger drivers face stricter limits) to stay focused on the road.  Burlington Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Vermont Clover FC, the state’s new UPSL club, won 5-1 on April 4. The club will host its next match today at Duffy Field on the St. Michael’s College campus in Colchester, as founders aim to build a development program for top local talent.  Burlington Free Press
  • Burr and Burton Academy's unified basketball team will travel to Minnesota in June to represent Vermont at the Special Olympics USA Games — the team is adding extra practices and new plays to get ready for their first national competition.  NBC5
