COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Islamic Community Center of Vermont is planning to relocate to a larger space on Riverside Avenue in Burlington and is seeking $100,000 in funding by April 28 to move from its cramped Winooski premises.   • South Burlington Recreation and Parks department is launching a summer farmers market where local growers will offer fresh produce. The event will take place as snow melts and spring emerges — a welcome sign for outdoor activity.  The Other Paper

CULTURE NEWS

  • Noah Kahan, a Vermont native, has been named to Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2026—praising his honest songcraft as noted by Mumford of Mumford & Sons. The singer's new album, The Great Divide, will be released April 24.  NBC5

  • Thursday at the State House, Vermont's tourism industry took center stage for Tourism Economy Day as lawmakers and business leaders discussed tourism's role in supporting local jobs and businesses, and officials urged lawmakers to invest in lodging improvements (a move to turn visitors into repeat guests).  NBC5
  • Champlain Valley winemaking may soon gain federal recognition as an American Viticultural Area, which could boost local vineyards by outlining the region’s unique grape origins. Public comments are accepted until May 26, and officials will decide afterward.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • House lawmakers voted 79-62 to advance education reform bill H.955 (which would create Cooperative Educational Service Areas and study committees to examine school district mergers) to the floor again tomorrow morning, though Gov. Scott has signaled a veto and party divisions persist over its potential impact.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Burlington's annual street sweeping starts April 22 with the Department of Public Works clearing zones overnight to reduce lake pollution and prevent flooding; downtown (Zone F) is swept from midnight to 6 a.m., and free parking is available at local garages to avoid fines.  Burlington Free Press
  • House lawmakers passed a bill banning paraquat herbicide that will be gradually phased out over 5 years with a full ban set for Nov. 1, 2030. The legislation follows concerns from apple growers & health experts after links emerged between the chemical and Parkinson's disease.  Burlington Free Press
