ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Hinesburg Fire Department responded to a multi-alarm house fire on Wile Street that left one person with life-threatening burn injuries— the victim fled the burning home as two nearby houses smoldered and officials said they are investigating without suspecting foul play.  NBC5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Young Writers Project released this week’s entry 'Where I keep my heart' featuring a poem by 15-year-old Rachel Brassard from Montpelier — the piece is paired with artwork 'Learning to Dance in the Rain' by Grace Weinstein from the YWP Media Library. The Burlington-based creative community has showcased teen writing and art since 2006.  VTDigger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Verterra Nursery is expanding its retail sales of native trees and shrubs to help restore local ecosystems and keep invasive species at bay. The nursery will hold plant sales from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.—April 26–27 and May 3–4—with prices at $10–20 each.  VermontBiz

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers in the State House reviewed bill H.454 for education funding and examined rules for independent schools as they plan for a mid-to-late May adjournment. In Burlington, debate over a charter change to ban guns in bars continues—voters showed strong support but turnout questions persist—while officials weigh next steps.  VermontBiz
  • Lawmakers in Burlington are considering a bill to extend free parenting support services—like secure video calls, virtual family court attendance and child-friendly in-person visits—to incarcerated fathers at Northwestern State Correctional Facility in Newport. The bill passed the House nearly unanimously last month and now awaits Senate committee review as the state plans to expand the program statewide by 2028.  VermontBiz

  • In December, the PGA of America named Derek Sprague as their new Chief Executive Officer—ending his long tenure at Malone Golf Club. He had managed Liberty National Golf Club and TPC Sawgrass before the change—preparing the organization for upcoming PGA Championship and Ryder Cup events.  NBC5
  • Flo Meiler, a 90-year-old Shelburne track athlete, earned eight gold medals and set four world records at last month’s Masters Indoor World Championships in Gainesville, Fla. She trains six days a week at UVM’s indoor track and South Burlington High School and has competed in track events since her 60s—she remains a local inspiration.  VTDigger
