COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Michael Thomas and other volunteers from the Cross Vermont Trail Association will publish a map and install signs later this year along the 19.7-mile Bayley Hazen Connector—which runs from Danville to Wells River—to link their trail with the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail. Local town boards and Danville’s chamber of commerce support the project that aims to improve safety and offer non-car travel options for nearby communities.  VTDigger

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire on Wile Street in Hinesburg on Sunday night seriously injured one person and damaged several homes; firefighters arrived at (5:26 p.m.) to find one home engulfed and two others smoking, and officials said the fire was under investigation and is not believed to be suspicious.  MyChamplainValley.com

CRIME NEWS

  • South Burlington Police investigated car break-ins on April 19 at Country Club Drive and National Guard Avenue plus two guns were stolen from vehicles as officers seek possible suspects.  MyChamplainValley.com
  • A Vermont jury convicted Burlington man Von Simmonds of second-degree murder for the Dec. 4, 2022 stabbing of Abubakar Sharrif at Piesanos restaurant on Main Street & he now faces up to life in prison with a presumptive minimum of 20 years.  Burlington Free Press
  • A Burlington man was arrested early Sunday after he allegedly slashed a man outside a nightclub with a box cutter—he was scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Chittenden County Court on charges of aggravated assault with a weapon, providing false information and disorderly conduct.  MyChamplainValley.com
  • A Burlington man was arrested on Sunday after he attacked a person with a boxcutter during a fight on Thorsen Way—staff intervened as he fled and police later caught him—and he faces charges of aggravated assault with a weapon, providing false information and disorderly conduct with bail set at $5,000.  NBC5
  • A Burlington man, Von Simmonds, 42, was convicted of second-degree murder on Friday after he fatally stabbed 23-year-old Abubakar Sharrif in a downtown restaurant brawl on Dec. 4 — he now faces up to life in prison as sentencing has not yet been set.  VTDigger

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bishop John McDermott of the Burlington Diocese released a statement after Pope Francis’s death, recalling his September visit to Rome—where he called the late pope a great ambassador for faith—and extending prayers for his soul. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph Cathedral on April 24, with prayers available after noon Mass until the 5:30 p.m. service.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Vermont Department of Labor announced a statewide series of spring job fairs that will connect job seekers with local employers in April and May. The events—set for locations in Newport on April 25, Middlebury on May 1, Rutland on May 8, Lyndon Center on May 9, Bennington on May 15, White River Junction on May 19, and Vergennes on June 5—are free and open to the public, and they will also offer resume help and interview strategies at local job centers.  VermontBiz
