CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist John Montage—Saint Albans native and assistant director—will use his chainsaw to turn locally sourced wood into unique art at Maple Fest this weekend. He will show his process live as he transforms cedar logs into intricate pieces and debuts his new festival role.  NBC5
  • After starring on Broadway in 'Hadestown' as Persephone, singer-songwriter Allison Russell will perform at a sold-out show at Higher Ground Ballroom in South Burlington on Wednesday, April 30 at 8 p.m.—this concert marks her return to touring following her acclaimed Broadway run.  Burlington Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Vermont legislators held a public hearing in the State House last Thursday on Proposition 3 — a proposed constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to organize and collectively bargain. The full House will vote on May 1 and, if approved, the measure will need another legislative go-ahead after the upcoming election before reaching the statewide ballot.  VermontBiz
  • The Vermont Senate passed Burlington’s charter change banning guns in businesses that serve alcohol after local voters showed 89.9% support in March — the measure was reintroduced following a deadly shooting outside Red Square on Church Street. The proposal now goes to the House for approval.  Burlington Free Press
  • Advocates from Vermont Foodbank, Hunger Free Vermont, Vermont Retail and Grocers Association and Vermont Farmers Market Association plan a SNAP Day of Action on April 30 to protest federal proposals to cut SNAP funding that would shift up to $140 million in costs to Vermont—threatening food access for 65,000 residents and local retailers.  VermontBiz

HEALTH NEWS

  • Burlington City Council approved a proposal Monday for an overdose prevention site to offer supervised drug use (after hearing support from residents), and the plan will now go to the Vermont Department of Health (with state funds expected by May) to help pay for the project.  NBC5

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Champlain Housing Trust and nonprofit Evernorth unveiled 65 permanently affordable apartments at Fort Ethan Allen in Colchester, with rent averaging $1,200 and 15 units reserved for unhoused residents. State officials view the project as a model amid federal funding uncertainties—while the third building is scheduled for renovation by the end of this year.  NBC5

  • High school sports fans in Vermont are invited to vote online for the boys Athlete of the Week ballot through Burlington Free Press from April 28 until 11:59 p.m. Thursday—votes will help select top performers from sports like track, lacrosse, and baseball with winners announced on Friday.  Burlington Free Press
