ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermonters will join in the 55th annual Green Up Day today as volunteers pick up trash from roads, parks, and rivers. Organizers expect a 30% increase in participation from last year and offer an app to track cleanup teams — making it easier for groups to work together.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Vermont Superior Court judge halted DCF evictions from the hotel-motel program after complaints of sudden removals—requiring the department to give residents notice and a chance to contest before evicting—and the order will stay in place until a hearing on May 16. This decision pauses the removals to protect people from being forced out without warning.  MyChamplainValley.com
  • The U.S. Justice Department filed lawsuits against Hawaii, Michigan, Vermont and New York this week to block state climate laws that would require fossil fuel companies to pay for past greenhouse gas damages, with New York seeking $75 billion and Vermont not specifying its target. The department argued that the laws violate federal authority and may harm energy independence.  NBC5
  • A Vermont judge approved a temporary restraining order—requiring proper notice before evictions—that stops the Department of Children and Families from removing people in the Hotel-Motel Voucher Program from state-funded motels. The order will remain until a hearing set for May 16.  NBC5

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Montpelier on May 1, the UVM Cancer Center launched its Outreach and Education Van to visit local events in Vermont and northern New York to offer cancer screenings, prevention education plus distribute sunscreen and SPF ChapStick. The program will also bring lab-on-wheels STEM lessons to rural high schools and send clinicians for future genetic screenings.  VermontBiz
  • The University of Vermont Children's Hospital held its annual Big Change Roundup at UVM Medical Center on Friday and raised over $356,000 to support children's medical care along with social and mental health services for families.
