- ➤ Burke Mountain Resort in East Burke has new local owners—Bear Den Partners—after being in receivership since 2016 because of a fraud case. The group closed the purchase on May 2 and plans to nearly triple snowmaking capacity for the 2025—2026 season. Burlington Free Press
- ➤ ZymoChem closed a financing round on April 29 led by lululemon with Toyota Ventures, GS Futures, and new investor FreshTracks Capital—funding that will speed up the commercialization of its bio-based materials and expand manufacturing capabilities including its Burlington division. The investment builds on a partnership from 2024 to develop sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based nylon 6,6 and is expected to support local job growth. VermontBiz
- ➤ After nearly a decade of government ownership, Burke Mountain Resort now has new owners. Bear Den Partners, which includes the Schaefer family, Burke Mountain Academy and the Graham family (who bought the area in 2000 to prevent its closure), purchased the resort for ($11.5 million) and said they plan to address ongoing challenges with the lifts, trails and amenities. - ➤ Vermont lawmakers are reviewing a bill (H.54) that would ban cell phones and personal electronic devices in school classrooms, except for medical or special education needs; if passed, the ban will take effect Dec. 1. Some support the plan to improve mental health and learning while others say phones can help with school research. Burlington Free Press

- ➤ Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark announced that the state received over $23 million from tobacco manufacturers as part of a settlement agreement stemming from a lawsuit filed in the 1990s—Vermont has collected more than $817 million in total from these companies since 1998. NBC5
- ➤ On Tuesday, the Vermont House overwhelmingly approved a bill that gives military retirees a full tax exemption on pensions for residents earning up to $125,000 and a partial exemption for those with incomes between $125,000 and $175,000. The measure—part of a $13.5 million tax relief package—will next be considered by the Vermont Senate. Vermont Public
- ➤ Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish Tufts University student detained in Louisiana, argued on Tuesday, May 6, that overcrowded conditions worsened her asthma attacks and harmed her health while she awaited a transfer to Vermont. Her legal team claimed her detention violated her constitutional rights + officials maintain that Louisiana retains jurisdiction. MyChamplainValley.com
