EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Vermont State University reported that all 46 nursing students achieved a 100% NCLEX-RN pass rate and graduates also passed the ADN and NCLEX-PN exams with 92% and 99% success respectively (with most seeking licensure in Vermont) on May 7. The university will expand its nursing program by adding seats and opening a new campus in Johnson to help meet the local nursing shortage. VermontBiz
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Vermont Parks Forever has launched a pilot program offering free day-use entry to Vermont State Parks for over 100,000 income eligible Vermonters from the end of May through October (available to those receiving WIC and other state services). The initiative builds on a program that has provided over 50,000 free days since 2016. VermontBiz
- ➤ Lake Champlain Committee is recruiting volunteers for its Champlain Aquatic Invasive Monitoring Program (CHAMP) to survey the lake for invasive species and report their findings using provided toolkits. The program requires volunteers to attend a virtual training on May 29th from 3:00–4:30 p.m. and complete three surveys between June and October at designated lakeshore and boat-based sites. - ➤ Vermont State Police conducted an Amber Alert test on May 7 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to check state alert systems—alerts were sent to VTrans message boards, lottery signs and kiosks, VT-Alert subscribers, and via the Emergency Alert System on radio and television. MyChamplainValley.com
- ➤ The Vermont House passed a bipartisan tax credit bill that expands the military pension exemption and offers tax relief for low-income families, veterans and retirees—cutting state revenue by over $13 million annually. The bill now awaits Senate approval as lawmakers work to support families and attract military retirees. VTDigger
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Blastomycosis—an uncommon but treatable fungal infection—has become more common in three northern counties where nearly half of Vermont’s cases occur, and health officials now track the disease to help doctors diagnose it faster. Seven Days
- ➤ University of Vermont Medical Center now uses 3D printing to make low-cost mannequins so rural emergency care providers can practice life-saving skills more often. More than 10 models have been printed (including ones for ultrasound practice and bone injections) through a partnership with UVM Larner College of Medicine. MyChamplainValley.com
- ➤ Hospitals and state leaders are trying to cut $200 million in spending—an urgent step—to stop Blue Cross from asking for a 20% rate hike later this month.
