BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mamava—founded by Sasha Meyer and Christine Dodson—celebrated Mother’s Day by reflecting on 12 years of delivering private lactation pods for breastfeeding parents in Vermont and beyond. The company continues to face tariff challenges that are expected to raise production costs as it plans to expand its network in workplaces and public spaces.  NBC5

CULTURE NEWS

  • A federal agency canceled grants for Vermont arts organizations including the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Vermont Folklife, and the Flynn Center in Burlington—these funds were withdrawn on May 12. The Vermont Arts Council will continue to receive funding from the National Endowment for the Arts—local artists can still apply for grants from the council.  Vermont Public

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gasoline prices in Burlington rose 0.4 cents this week to average $3.16 per gallon today—while the range stayed between $3.04 and $3.29 in the city. Nationwide, prices fell to $3.08 per gallon as refineries finished seasonal maintenance and prepared to boost output.  VermontBiz

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CVU students started The Hawks’ Nest, a new print newspaper you can pick up in the cafeteria, library, and teachers’ mailboxes — it is the first paper of its kind since 2008 and is run by high school juniors sharing school news.  VTDigger
  • The University of Vermont will hold its 224th commencement ceremony on May 18 on the historic University Green in Burlington with nearly 3,000 graduates—families and friends will attend additional ceremonies at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction for better access and comfort. Key speakers will include James M. Betts and university officials—highlighting honors for a class that features members of the national championship men’s soccer team.  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermont towns are working to slow the emerald ash borer, which has been found in 96 of 247 municipal areas; Plainfield saw heavy infestations in late April while Hardwick has yet to record a case—local efforts include educational outreach, insecticide treatments, and grant-funded tree removals. Calais applied for a grant to remove about 3,000 ash trees along roadways, and state experts say these steps help protect residents and local forests.  VTDigger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 12, Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak held a press conference to outline Burlington's plan for a balanced FY26 budget that includes modest tax increases, staff cuts, and investments in community health — safety and housing work.   • UVM Medical Center held its annual Nursing Awards and Scholarships Ceremony during Nurses Week to honor nurses for clinical excellence, leadership and patient care.
