  • During Green Up Day, South Burlington resident Jeffrey Trubisz found a liquor bottle on Lake Champlain with a note dated May 26, 2014 that reads "Help! Broke leg, Spiltrock. Send help and bring more wiskey." He is reflecting on the surprising find as part of his shamanism study.  Seven Days

BUSINESS NEWS

  • PopUp Bagels, a popular New England bagel chain, will open its first Vermont location at 42 Church Street in downtown Burlington, although officials say the opening date is not yet announced.  NBC5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vermont musician Grace Potter will host the Grand Point North music festival from Friday, Sept. 18 to Sunday, Sept. 20 at Waterfront Park in Burlington. The event features acts like Portugal. The Man and Dawes, with proceeds benefiting her foundation for music and art education.  NBC5
  • Best Day Ever, a new documentary, follows adaptive mountain bikers riding the first adaptive trail network built by local volunteers in Bolton. The film features Allie Bianchi (a special educator paralyzed in 2022) and others, and has won awards at festivals since last fall.  VTDigger

  • Fletcher Free Library has upgraded its audio-visual equipment & soundproofing in the Fletcher Room at 235 College St. following a grant from Friends of the Fletcher Free Library to enhance programs and accessibility for visitors.  Burlington Free Press
  • Jess, a doula and homesteader from Vermont, is enrolled in VLGS’s online JD program after earning significant scholarships, and she balances her studies with managing a rural health project and farm animal care in North Carolina (she remains focused on supporting community legal aid).  VTDigger
  • UVM is facing a multi-million-dollar budget deficit due to a nearly 7% drop in undergraduate enrollment, including a 15% fall in new students. University officials said they have planned for this decline and are adjusting housing, dining and auxiliary budgets (and boosting retention efforts) to ensure affordability and access.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New research from Dartmouth College shows that rain in the Northeast is falling in intense bursts with longer dry spells, a pattern that may lead to more flooding and flash droughts in Vermont.
