COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Vermont Parks Forever launched a pilot program to offer free day-use entry to state parks for over 100,000 low-income Vermonters from late May through October. Families and individuals receiving Economic Services Division and WIC benefits are eligible, and private donors fully fund the program— the first of its kind in the nation. Burlington Free Press
- ➤ Dan Smith, President and CEO of the Vermont Community Foundation, warned that Vermont faces severe challenges from reduced federal support, rising costs, and recent floods that strain community programs. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s Underwater Preservation Program uses yellow buoys to mark historic shipwreck sites and guide divers to underwater signage under the federal Abandoned Shipwreck Act. The museum will soon expand access for non-divers by offering boat tours with remote-operated vehicles that stream live images—while digital 3D models of the wrecks are also available online. The project invites youth ages 13-19 to share their writing and art on a free, interactive website. VTDigger
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Bekah Mandell explained that Vermont’s education funding system is based on statewide school taxes that treat all towns equally—allowing local voters to control spending and keeping tax rates consistent regardless of wealth. She added that reforms following a mid-1990s lawsuit made the system more equal—although changes are needed to ease tax jumps for low and middle-income residents. VermontBiz
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Former AHS Secretary Mike Smith was named by the Green Mountain Care Board to review UVM Health Network program costs with a focus on administrative expenses—he will compare Vermont's costs with those of states like Maine to guide future changes. Vermont Public
