COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 2,200 Vermonters said finding local news is hard (feedback was collected during community events and surveys from August to October 2025), and VTDigger will use these insights to better cover small-town stories.  VTDigger
  • Memory cafes across Vermont offer free support for caregivers and their loved ones with dementia. Run by local agencies, the gatherings provide a safe space to share advice & ease the burden of caregiving.  Vermont Public
  • A fundraising event for nonprofit Empty Arms Vermont was renamed Good Grief 5K Run + Walk. It will occur May 30 at 10 a.m. in Veterans Memorial Park in South Burlington and is expected to raise over $50,000 to fund support for families who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss.  NBC5
  • The VT Creemee Passport program invites locals to explore 156 creemee spots across the region for custom stamps and free perks like sprinkles + maple drizzle. Founder Adam Rice from New Haven introduced the initiative this summer to boost local businesses and give back to the community.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Elementary students at Integrated Arts Academy spent Tuesday morning planting a new school garden funded by a grant from Dealer.com by Cox Automotive and the Captain Planet Foundation — which also funded gardens at all six elementary schools — as they look forward to feeding their school.  NBC5
  • Milton voters approved a revised school budget for the 2026 to 2027 school year on Tuesday. The school board cut $83,000 from the original plan to lower the tax rate rise from 9.8% to 2.9%, which means a tax increase of about $126 per year for a median home valued at $350,000.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 15, regulators suspended the license of Barre’s Forbins Finest for running an off-the-books grow and misleading officials — the firm may lose its license if it does not submit a corrective plan by Nov. 16, and the owners plan to appeal while keeping their retail store open.  Seven Days

HEALTH NEWS

  • With Memorial Day weekend ahead, first responders warn that Lake Champlain water remains in the 40s, making swimming & paddle sports risky so people should avoid water recreation until warmer summer temperatures arrive.  NBC5
  • The Vermont Burlesque Festival raised $1,726 for the University of Vermont Cancer Center at Barre Opera House on May 8, with half supporting breast cancer research and the remainder aiding patient care. Donations from attendees, performers, sponsors, and supporters fueled the community fundraiser.  Burlington Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Seven Vermont City Marathon record-holders will be inducted into the RunVermont Hall of Fame on Friday, May 22 at the DoubleTree by Hilton on Williston Road in South Burlington. The ceremony comes ahead of the marathon on Sunday, May 24 and honors athletes, coaches, and advocates.  Burlington Free Press
  • Burlington's team secured the 2026 Unified basketball championship in a competitive game and released highlights today.  Burlington Free Press
  • Girls on the Run Vermont is fielding two relay teams at the upcoming M and T Bank Vermont City Marathon and Relay to raise $4,000 and help keep program fees low for families (the event also reunites alumni and coaches to inspire young runners).  NBC5
  • Burlington Unified won the Unified Basketball Championship on Tuesday, May 19 (at Norwich University) with a 44-31 win over Middlebury. The Seahorses built a 19-point lead after a key third-quarter basket by Ella St. Francis, and coach Mike Leonard praised the team's unity.  Burlington Free Press
