Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 22nd of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Drivers in Burlington should plan for several road closures as the Vermont City Marathon & Relay starts at 7 a.m. Sunday in Waterfront Park—streets including Lake, Main, and Church have specific closure times and resident traffic exceptions.  Burlington Free Press
  • Burlington's Community Sailing Center became debt-free after a broader donor push paid off its loans — it now offers accessible sailing lessons and conservation education for local youth.  Seven Days

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vermont State University graduated 185 new journeyman plumbers and electricians from its apprenticeship programs with the Vermont Department of Labor this month. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermont Parks Forever announced that over 100,000 eligible Vermonters enrolled in programs such as 3SquaresVT and WIC can visit state parks free from May through October by showing an active EBT or WIC card at park entrances. The nonprofit will also issue a special card at local Economic Services district offices — a move to boost outdoor access — as the program runs this summer.  Seven Days
  • Julie Silverman, the lakekeeper for the Conservation Law Foundation, worked to clean up Lake Champlain by picking up trash along the Winooski River and shores—she also met with lawmakers and taught local students how to protect the lake. Her work aims to track pollution and support policies that keep the water safe.  Seven Days

HEALTH NEWS

  • Vermont opioid overdose deaths fell in 2024 to 183, the lowest tally in four years, as state health officials credited expanded naloxone distribution and harm reduction strategies. However, a treatment recovery director warned that the lower death count may not reflect overall improvements in opioid use and recovery support — underscoring ongoing challenges with housing and access to treatment.  VTDigger
