COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Community Sailing Center is hosting its annual season opener on May 30 from noon to 6 p.m. along the waterfront, where families can enjoy $10 lake sails, a nautical knot contest, and art projects (including painting sails and making cork boats) to celebrate summer.  Burlington Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Burlington restaurants and shops had a busy holiday weekend even though cold, rainy weather kept some customers away; Leunig's Bistro sold out on Friday and Saturday while the Vermont City Marathon brought up to $3.3 million to the city. Business leaders hope for a sunnier summer.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Burlington School District communications specialist Russ Elek was named New England School Communicator of the Year today by the New England School Public Relations Association (the regional chapter for school communication professionals). He will represent New England in the national competition for the award.  Burlington Free Press
  • The Vermont Senate will vote on an education consolidation amendment tomorrow in Montpelier that could make school redistricting voluntary and delay a new finance system until FY 2030. Lawmakers say local voters will have a role in deciding school district mergers if the amendment passes.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from the U.S. Forest Service and The Nature Conservancy are testing disease resistant American elms (once common) at a 28 acre Benson orchard to boost biodiversity and flood resilience. The team will measure tree responses to fungal infection and propagate survivors for future flood plain and urban plantings.  VTDigger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Burlington police warned riders today to review Vermont’s e-bike law after video during the Vermont City Marathon showed young riders using motorbikes and modified e-bikes on city bike paths at speeds near 30 mph+residents and cyclists urge clearer enforcement to keep paths safe.  NBC5

SPORTS NEWS

  • UVM javelin thrower Emma Wapshare will compete in her second NCAA East Regional preliminary round on Thursday, May 28 at the University of Kentucky — the athlete recovered from an ACL tear after winning the America East championship and now aims to break the school record.  NBC5
  • Harley Ruffle is an eight-year-old who has spent over 100 days on the slopes this winter at Killington and nearby resorts. He now helps new riders learn snowboarding and plans to try mountain biking over the summer + continues to excel in his sixth season.  NBC5
