BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two local restaurants closed this weekend; El Gato Cantina in Essex Junction closed on May 31 and will relocate to South Burlington by late July, while The Cafe HOT in Burlington ended its nearly five-year run as its owners returned home.  Burlington Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Burlington Discover Jazz Festival will run from Wednesday, June 3 to Sunday, June 7, featuring free and ticketed music events at venues like City Hall Park, downtown streets and Waterfront Park, with highlights including student bands, lunchtime jazz series and tribute shows (prices vary).  Burlington Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Legislators passed an education reform plan on Friday — bill H.955 — that keeps school mergers voluntary and lowers district overtime limits. Districts are required to meet with state facilitators to develop proposals that voters will decide on town meeting day in 2028.  NBC5
  • Today at 5:02 a.m., students and alumni gathered at Albert D. Lawton Intermediate School in Essex Junction to unseal a 1976 time capsule that held vintage items and a paper-mache astronaut; after the ceremony, a new capsule with modern keepsakes was buried to be opened in 2076.  Burlington Free Press

  • High school sports fans in Burlington can vote online for the Vermont Varsity Insider Boys Athlete of the Week, presented by Delta Dental, through 9 p.m. Thursday, June 4. Winners will be announced on Friday, June 5 (nominees include Henry Dimitroff, Zak Fortin, Niah LeMay, Cole Page and Jameson Wilhite-Keene).  Burlington Free Press
