COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ellie Mae, an 8-year-old spotted German shorthaired pointer, comforts anxious travelers at Burlington airport during her three-hour shifts most days. Her owner, John Wrobel, restarted the airport's therapy dog program in 2023 after a pause in service during the pandemic—helping to ease travel stress.  Seven Days
  • A volunteer program called Aging in Place with Pets provided weekly at-home visits to about 50 Burlington residents to assist with pet care needs. Occupational therapist Blake Randell launched the service in 2023 and now plans to expand it to serve more older Vermonters—especially those with health or mobility challenges.  Seven Days

BUSINESS NEWS

  • GlobalFoundries said it would invest $16 billion to upgrade its chip-making and packaging plants in Vermont and New York to meet growing demand for AI work. Most of the money will update operations while $3 billion will fund research on tech—tech that uses light to process data.  NBC5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vermont musicians will celebrate Make Music Day on summer solstice, June 21, with church bells tolling in Randolph to launch a day of free performances across various venues — from concert halls to home living rooms. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak on Tuesday signed a resolution to spend $10K to move the Food Not Cops free lunch service to a safer and more accessible spot downtown — this decision follows a City Council vote and public debate — as officials and volunteers plan the transition by July 14.  VTDigger
  • Federal lawmakers are considering a bill that may cut SNAP benefits for up to 13,000 Vermonters and reduce food aid by $7 million to $33 million annually. Local farmers, still recovering from recent floods, warn that fewer SNAP dollars could worsen food insecurity—officials are watching how state reserve funds might be used to offset these losses.  Vermont Public
