COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Burlington will host Vermont’s largest fireworks display on the Waterfront on July 3, starting at 5:30 p.m. with live music, food vendors, and a show that begins at 9:30 p.m. + The city advises using shuttles, avoiding personal fireworks, and following harbor and parking rules for safety.  Burlington Free Press

  • Artist Noni Stuart made portraits of homeless people she met at church meals to show their strength and vulnerability—she will show her work at a Facing Homelessness benefit art show on Sunday, June 29 at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church where donated art will help fund homeless outreach.  Seven Days

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Burlington received $700,000 from the EPA when Rep. Becca Balint announced Tuesday that the Bartlett Bay wastewater plant will be improved. The city will replace old fossil-fuel systems with efficient heat pump units—cutting energy use and helping to keep wastewater rates low during a 1- to 3-year upgrade.  VermontBiz
  • Burlington City Council approved a $107.1 million budget for fiscal year 2026 that closed a $9.8 million gap by raising taxes and cutting staff. The plan will fund extra public safety measures and support local businesses while restructuring city departments — a compromise reached by the mayor and council.  Seven Days
  • Kurt Wright, known as Kwik Stop Kurt, retired from radio and was celebrated by a diverse group at his party on Saturday night at the Elks Lodge—he served on city council and in the state House. Former colleagues and local leaders praised his work and friendly approach as he ended a long career in public service.  Seven Days

  • After a drowning Tuesday night at Basin Harbor Club, officials and water safety experts urged Vermonters to wear life jackets, check weather forecasts, and inform someone of their plans before heading onto lakes and rivers this summer—steps meant to counter changing weather and reduced visibility at night.  NBC5
