ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday evening, a man drowned in Lake Champlain near Red Rocks Park after a visitor saw his body just before 8 p.m.—police say the death appears accidental with no evidence of foul play.  NBC5

CRIME NEWS

  • A Burlington man, Noor Mohamed, 25, was arrested last weekend on Church Street after he allegedly disturbed the area, resisted arrest and reached for his loaded gun + which had 13 rounds and defaced serial numbers, and he now faces felony charges for possessing ammunition.  NBC5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Matthew Wurnig filmed an episode of his viral dating series 50 Dates 50 States in Vermont on Thursday (June 26) at Golden Dog Farm in Jeffersonville; he will have dinner in Burlington with his date, Brooke, before attending the Wines and Wags event (later this week) and posting the episode on social media in mid-July.  NBC5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Georgie Rubens, director of the Burlington Farmers Market, warned that if Congress cuts SNAP and Medicaid, local families and farmers will face less access to healthy food and reduced income—changes that could hurt Burlington's local economy. He urged lawmakers to protect these programs so that community members continue to benefit from fresh, local produce.  VermontBiz

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Burlington City Hall hosted a ceremony where nine firefighters were sworn in, with six finishing recruit academy recently (all joining the force within the last year) as officials congratulated them.  MyChamplainValley.com
  • The Vermont Congressional Delegation announced a $5.8 million grant from the FAA (via the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law) to upgrade Leahy Burlington International Airport. The funds will rebuild the second-floor corridor and replace four jet bridges (to boost safety and access) for passengers.  VermontBiz
  • Burlington City Council unanimously approved a $107.1M budget for fiscal year 2025‑26 on June 25 that closed a nearly $10M gap by reducing staff and increasing municipal taxes—raising taxes by $115 on a $500,000 home while cutting education taxes; the budget also funds programs for community safety, housing, mental health and senior services.  VTDigger
