- ➤ Gas prices in New England declined slightly last week from $3.08 to $3.05 per gallon, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said & the national average was $3.16 per gallon. Burlington Free Press
- ➤ Vermont weekly unemployment claims fell to 531 new claims for the week ending June 28—117 fewer than the previous week—while the statewide unemployment rate for May held at 2.6% with 900 seasonal jobs added since April. The service sector led claims at 42% and manufacturing claims rose by 12 points, keeping total claims above 3,200 for the week. VermontBiz
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ MENTOR Vermont hosted its first Annual Youth Day in Burlington on July 2 to bring together over 60 youth and mentors for hands-on workshops and community activities. A planning committee of six teenagers led breakout sessions in dance, art and team building to celebrate connection and leadership in mentoring. VermontBiz
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents in South Burlington have filed a petition with City Council to oppose a proposed 32-unit mixed housing development near Wheeler Nature Park, arguing it will harm local views, wildlife, and the park’s ecosystem. Over 290 neighbors (including longtime opponent James Marc Leas) support calls for the council to consider options for the disputed 7-acre parcel at an executive session on July 7. VTDigger
- ➤ Fletcher Free Library announced that the west side of its youth wing will close on Monday, July 7 for two weeks for window refurbishment while continuing to offer requested picture books at the end of each day. Staff will temporarily relocate some children’s books and toys to the Local History Room—preserving the historic stained glass window designed by Walter R.B. Willcox. MyChamplainValley.com
- ➤ Road work on I-89 in Colchester will close one lane from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday to Friday as crews repair the US 2 bridge while VT 116 resurfacing in Hinesburg-South Burlington runs from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on weekdays with additional work Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.—Readsboro’s VT 100 Bridge project and Springfield’s culvert replacement will shift lanes and affect traffic next week. - ➤ Emily Brown, a former deputy commissioner of insurance, will become executive director of the Green Mountain Care Board on Aug. 18—she will replace Susan Barrett, who will serve as chief operating officer. Brown brings over a decade of experience from the Department of Financial Regulation and is set to guide the board through new health care challenges. Burlington Free Press
