- ➤ Burlington police are searching for several suspects after Jake's ONE Market on Winooski Ave was robbed multiple times this summer — the first incident in May involved a suspect handing a threatening note, a June event saw cash exchanged with a second person, and on July 6 a suspect returned, made threats, and left behind clothing for DNA and fingerprint tests. - ➤ Downtown Burlington saw a beloved music tradition return Friday as The Skinny Pancake Burlington and Einstein’s Tap House teamed up to revive a Grateful Dead cover series—bringing live music back to local venues. The Skinny Pancake will host 'Dancin’ in the Streets' with Local Strangers each Friday while Einstein’s will offer a Tuesday cover show with Josh Dobbs from 8 to 11 p.m. NBC5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students at Vermont State University begin flying in their first semester of the state's only four-year pilot aviation degree program, where they work to earn seven certifications needed to fly for airlines, private companies, and the military. Program director Robin Guillian said the program also runs a YES initiative for Burlington high schoolers and partners with international groups—like the 99s, which will hold its annual conference in Burlington from July 9 to 13. - ➤ South Burlington City Council honored Deputy Fire Chief Terence Francis on Monday night before his retirement after 52 years of service—his last day is Friday, July 11. Francis began his career in 1973 at St. Michael’s Fire and Rescue and later spent 39 years with the Burlington Fire Department before serving in South Burlington. NBC5
- ➤ The Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport will receive $5.8 million from the FAA as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law — the funds will rebuild its second-floor corridor and replace four jet bridges to improve accessibility and safety as passenger demand grows — Vermont’s Congressional Delegation and airport director Nic Longo say the investment is key for future growth. - ➤ Burlington paused its planned overnight parking pilot program at Perkins Pier on July 3rd after strong community feedback and online threats raised safety concerns. The program, set to start on July 4 for unhoused residents leaving hotel programs, was put on indefinite hold as officials cited the city’s limited resources+ no permits had been issued. - ➤ During UV Safety Awareness Month, experts at UVM Medical Center warn Burlington residents that even on cloudy days the sun’s UV rays can damage skin cells, harm DNA, and increase the risk of skin cancer if proper protection is not used. They advise using broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 — and wearing sun-protective clothing while avoiding the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. NBC5
