EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A new education law went into effect last week that limits which private schools receive public tuition dollars by disqualifying out-of-state schools and those in districts operating public schools for all grades or with fewer than 25% publicly funded students. As of July 1—those already enrolled may remain until graduation—while many independent schools now face a loss of eligibility for public funds. Vermont Public
- ➤ The University of Vermont has received a $1.2 million federal grant to expand its clinical psychology training program, which will train 12 Ph.D. students and offer placements with local health centers—Community Health Centers of Burlington and St. Albans Primary Care. The grant will fund a seminar series on substance use treatment and integrated care over the next three years to help address Vermont’s mental health crisis. Burlington Free Press

- ➤ Last week, some Burlington beaches closed due to cyanobacteria blooms that made the water look like pea soup or spilled blue paint. Officials warn that the algae can release toxins that may cause rashes and stomach upset — visitors are advised to steer clear of the affected areas. MyChamplainValley.com

- ➤ The Vermont Aging Network Consortium announced it has received a $450,000 federal grant to modernize the Older Vermonters Helpline and information systems statewide. VANC will work with all five Area Agencies on Aging to upgrade call technology (including staff training and marketing efforts) over the next two years. VermontBiz

- ➤ University of Vermont Health Network Home, Health & Hospice earned a 5 Star rating from CMS's Hospice Quality Report—this is the only hospice in Chittenden and Grand Isle counties to receive the top mark, and the team provided care 24 hours a day with expertise and compassion. VermontBiz
- ➤ Cathedral Square received a $125,000 grant from the Alzheimer’s Association Center for Dementia Respite Innovation to pilot a new respite care program at its Memory Care at Allen Brook community in Williston. The nonprofit—established in Burlington—will use online training and technical support to provide local caregivers a sustainable break from their 24-hour duties. VermontBiz
- ➤ The Vermont Department of Health reported that COVID-19 hospitalizations remained near zero statewide from June 22 to June 28, with wastewater tests showing low virus levels+ slight rises in Burlington and Middlebury.
