COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Summervale returns to Burlington at the Intervale Center from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with free family fun including a community tree planting along the Winooski River, live music from local bands starting at 2:30, and a 5K trail run at 4:30; the event also features local food vendors, lawn games, and a self-guided riverside trail loop — all designed to bring our community together — and promises a day of outdoor adventure and conservation efforts.  MyChamplainValley.com

CRIME NEWS

  • An immigration judge in Massachusetts set bond on July 10 for migrant justice activist Jose Ignacio Nacho De La Cruz and his stepdaughter aged 18 after their June 14 arrest in Richford while they delivered food to farmworkers—Border Patrol said they did not follow orders while Migrant Justice described the detention as violent and said they will soon be released to family supporters.  Burlington Free Press
  • Burlington police arrested 23-year-old Joshua Rheaume on Thursday for robbing Jake's ONE Market three times since May and stealing more than $500; he now faces three counts of assault and robbery while investigators search for an alleged accomplice.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Burlington’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront confirmed nearly all beaches are closed to swimming due to cyanobacteria blooms detected on July 10—only the North Shore Natural Area remains open. Officials say the blooms, at a category three blue-green algae level, may cause sickness in humans and pets.  MyChamplainValley.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Burlington held a groundbreaking on Thursday to start construction on upgrades to its main wastewater treatment plant after voters approved a $172 million plan on Town Meeting Day. The improvements will streamline treatment + reduce stormwater overflow and support environmental and housing goals over the next several years.  NBC5

HEALTH NEWS

  • On July 8, the Howard Center in Burlington said it will cut 27 jobs and leave 30 open positions unfilled because of rising health care and program costs. The center will also close day programming at Westview House and change substance use services in nearby counties starting in September.  VTDigger
