Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 21st of July.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Genesis HealthCare (which has faced care and safety concerns) filed for bankruptcy last week so that Vermont's three operating nursing homes (Bel Aire Center in Newport, Mountain View Center in Rutland City and Saint Albans Health and Rehabilitation) will keep their staff positions and pay during court proceedings. Past reports of neglect and safety violations have led state officials and advocates to question the oversight and future quality of care at these facilities.  VTDigger

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vermont’s students scored lower than most states in math and reading tests despite spending a lot on education (Art Woolf says Vermont ranks near the bottom for fourth and eighth grade performance). Lawmakers must now work to boost education quality along with the recent reforms in school financing.  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials warn that giant hogweed, a noxious invasive plant that can grow over 20 feet tall, grows in moist areas and its sap burns skin when exposed to sunlight. Burlington residents should avoid touching it and report any sightings to local experts for safe removal (protective gear is advised during removal).  MyChamplainValley.com
  • The Agency of Natural Resources’ Climate Action Office released Vermont’s latest greenhouse gas emissions inventory from 1990 to 2022, showing 2022 emissions at 8.25 MMTCO2e (record low aside from the COVID drop in 2020). Future targets require steep reductions, with emissions set to drop to 7.28 MMTCO2e by 2024 and long-term goals adjusted based on updated baseline data (as mandated by the Global Warming Solutions Act).  VermontBiz

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • This week, road construction projects are affecting interstates and state highways across Vermont with lane shifts, temporary closures, and reduced speed limits planned on routes such as I-89 and I-91. Motorists are advised to follow posted detour routes and signage — details vary by location — during work hours.  VermontBiz
  • On July 17, Vermont’s congressional delegation announced a $22.7 million federal grant to replace the old Winooski River Bridge. The new project will rebuild the bridge with a wider design — adding improved sidewalks, drainage systems and intersection upgrades to boost safety and prepare for extreme weather.  Burlington Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Centennial Field, the Vermont Lake Monsters drew a large crowd on Hotdog Hysteria night as fans enjoyed 25-cent franks and a lively game. After MLB cuts in 2020 threatened the team’s future, new ownership rebuilt the roster with local talent and community partnerships, and the ballpark was renamed Delta Dental Park (a 10-year sponsorship deal) to support team operations.  VTDigger
