COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sen. Peter Welch joined staff and kids at the Boys and Girls Club yesterday for the grand opening of the renovated pool, a project that took four years and $600,000 and was made possible by federal funds—supporting local efforts to provide swim lessons, sports instruction and free meals. The ceremony also included a ribbon-cutting where the pool was named after longtime staff member Joyce McEntee.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cyanobacteria blooms in Lake Champlain closed several Burlington beaches Monday, including North Beach, Texaco Beach, Blanchard Beach, Oakledge Cove, and Blodgett Water Access Point, while Leddy Beach is under advisory and children & pets should not swim. Officials say the beaches will reopen when the blooms dissipate and the water becomes safe for recreation.  NBC5
  • Wildfire smoke is affecting local air quality today as most areas face moderate levels while near the Canadian border the air may become unhealthy for sensitive groups—people with heart or lung problems, seniors, children, and outdoor workers should limit heavy outdoor activity.  MyChamplainValley.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Phil Scott announced that Commissioner Nick Deml will leave the Department of Corrections on August 15 and that interim commissioner Jon Murad (a former Burlington police chief) will take over to continue modernizing operations and building public trust. Deml improved technology and staff morale during his time, and Murad is set to build on those efforts.  VermontBiz
  • Governor Phil Scott announced Monday that former Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad has been named interim Corrections Commissioner and will take over on August 15 when Commissioner Nick Deml steps down — Murad was placed on leave in April to aid the transition.  NBC5
