CRIME NEWS

  • A Burlington police officer shot at a vehicle driver early Sunday near 16 Prospect Hill—he has been placed on paid administrative leave, and Vermont State Police say his identity will be released on Monday as the investigation continues.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers in Chittenden County are preparing for students' return as the new school year begins toward the end of August — most public schools start on August 27 while a few districts begin on August 26 or August 28, and some independent schools plan to start on August 26 or in early September.  Burlington Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermont’s 8,534 miles of dirt roads erode and let phosphorus and sediment run off into waterways, which harms water quality. Towns are improving drainage and culvert sizes—key fixes in the permit program—to reduce future flooding and pollution.  VermontBiz

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The AOT Road Construction Report details planned work zones on key highways such as I-89, I-91, and several state routes across Vermont this week, with reduced lanes, speed limits, and detours in effect. Drivers are urged to follow posted signage and expect delays as projects continue through late August—safety in work zones remains a priority.  VermontBiz
  • Nick Deml, who led Vermont’s prison system since 2021, said the department is stable after facing pandemic challenges and staffing shortages. He will step down Friday—Gov. Phil Scott appointed former Burlington police chief Jon Murad as interim commissioner.  Vermont Public

SPORTS NEWS

  • Vermont Green FC played soccer and promoted social causes by having environmental advocates and political figures speak at halftime while fans raised over $25,000 to help immigrant communities during a record season. The club’s fans also used banners and themed games to show their mission *of giving back on and off the field*.  VTDigger
  • Pitchers Zach Davis and Cole Tarrant are playing for the Lake Monsters at Centennial Field and say playing baseball at home is a dream come true—both hope to help the team win a trophy and inspire local fans. Davis, now at Bryant University, and Tarrant, a Hobart College player, returned for the 2025 season after starting their careers in high school and enjoying strong community support.  VTDigger
