Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 17th of August.
Good morning, Burlington.
🏘️ Community
Mike Baker, a Barre resident, retrieved a lost wedding ring from 3 feet of water at Lake Dunmore on a sunny July Fourth weekend after local David Miles noticed it missing; he donated half his reward to the Central Vermont Humane Society.
🌲 Environment
Vermont plans to update its 33-year primitive camping rules by banning live wood for campfires and requiring camps be 200 feet from water to reduce wildfire risks and pollution.
Public hearings will be held (Manchester Community Library on Sept. 22 and Waterbury Town Offices on Sept. 24).
A federal rule change removed the broad 'harm' definition from the Endangered Species Act — the new rule may let drilling, mining and logging enter habitats for Vermont's rare species.
Experts warn state rules could be strained as legal challenges seek to stop the change before Sept. 14.
🏛️ Government
Candidate Molly Gray, a former lieutenant governor, issued a statement today recognizing the 5-year anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and praising Vermont's Afghan community for their work in healthcare and education (and inviting residents to support local organizations serving their needs).
🏥 Health
The Department of Veterans Affairs signed a lease to open a new outpatient clinic in South Burlington by fall 2028 (patient services will begin by spring 2029).
The 36,246 sqft facility will offer primary, mental, and specialty care for local veterans.
