CRIME NEWS

  • An autopsy completed Saturday at Burlington's Chief Medical Examiner’s Office found that James Crary, 36, died from a gunshot wound to the head after he drove his car toward officers in Springfield — state police are investigating the fatal incident as the involved officers remain on paid leave.  VermontBiz
  • Burlington Police, Burlington Fire and Vermont State Police are investigating a suspicious package on Pearl Street—officials expect updates as the inquiry continues.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marlene Tromp began her tenure as UVM’s 28th president on July 1 after a search of over 100 candidates—she now faces budget and enrollment challenges—while Ian Baucom started as Middlebury College president on the same day as the school works to address financial and student concerns.   • VBSR will host a free webinar on September 10 to examine how recent federal decisions will shape Vermont’s future—panelists will address impacts on workforce development, renewable energy and education.  VermontBiz
  • Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas promised today that voter information (such as driver's license details, birthdates, voting history, or the last four digits of social security numbers) will not be shared with federal agencies following a DOJ civil division request. She said cities and towns may provide checklists to inquirers, but state law protects this data from commercial use or disclosure to any federal or foreign entity.  NBC5
  • AOT’s weekly road construction report details work zones on state highways and interstates starting today. Crews will close lanes, lower speed limits, and set detours on routes including I-89 near Colchester and I-91 in Fairlee — motorists should plan extra travel time and follow posted signs.  VermontBiz

HEALTH NEWS

  • The GMCB completed its review of 2026 health insurance rate filings on 8.22.2025 and approved much lower increases from Blue Cross and Shield and MVP. The board lowered rates to 9.6% for Blue Cross and 1.3% for MVP for individual markets — a step to help keep health care costs affordable for over 70,000 Vermonters.  VermontBiz

  • Top-ranked Vermont soccer beat Boston University 4-0 at Virtue Field on Sunday, Aug. 24 with goals by Andrew Miller, Philipp Kuehn and Omar Robbana.
