GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Vermont Agency of Transportation announced a week-long plan for road construction that will affect highways and cause delays starting today. Motorists should plan for lane closures and one-way traffic—projects span routes from Colchester to Worcester.  VermontBiz
  • In 1850, Vermont lawmakers passed a Habeas Corpus Law that made the Fugitive Slave Law nearly impossible to enforce by requiring local officials to bring detained fugitives before a judge—Vermont citizens and newspapers held meetings to protest a law that forced them to support slavery. Gov. Charles Kilborn Williams and state leaders argued that the federal law violated constitutional rights and duty to due process.  VTDigger
  • Eight Vermont towns have started using situation tables—meetings where police and social services work together to help people with addiction, homelessness and crime.
