COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Fletcher Free Library in Burlington received a $50,000 grant from T-Mobile to preserve its historic 1904 Carnegie building and support free programs for study, storytimes, and job search help. Burlington was one of 25 communities selected—out of more than 1,000 applicants—and this is the second Hometown Grant the library has received.  NBC5
  • Burlington Farmers Market is a local staple that gathers residents and visitors on Pine Street each Saturday through Oct 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.—the event offers fresh produce, homemade treats and local crafts, and vendor Pedro Salas said sharing his bees’ honey is his greatest joy.  NBC5

FINANCE NEWS

  • A WalletHub report shows Vermont borrowers pay the highest student loan payments at a median of $248 per month—more than any other state. The report advises borrowers to budget well and explore options like increased income or forgiveness programs to ease their debt.  Burlington Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Burlington’s fire department teamed up with the National Fire Protection Association to launch a Charge into Fire Safety campaign that set up interactive displays to show how dangerous damaged lithium-ion batteries in phones, power tools and e-bikes can be. Fire Marshal Matthew Stone said the event taught residents that open burning is not allowed without a permit—especially amid ongoing dry conditions.  NBC5

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Oct. 4, Vermont soccer beat NJIT 2-1 in an America East match, extending its 21-game unbeaten streak as David Ismail scored his fourth goal and Andrew Millar added his second while Ludvig af Ugglas registered his first assist. The team is 8-0-3 overall and will play Harvard on Oct. 7 before hosting UMass Lowell on Oct. 11 — the win boosted their season start.  Burlington Free Press
