  • Rock Point School will host its 21st annual Ooky Spooky 5K fun run on Saturday, Oct. 25 at its campus on Lake Champlain in Burlington — the event raises funds for COTS to support emergency shelter and housing for locals. Participants, including students, families and staff, are encouraged to wear costumes and may win prizes for the best one.  VermontBiz

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Beta Technologies, an electric aviation company based at Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport, plans to raise $825 million by offering 25 million shares at a price between $27 and $33 in its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. The company, which has raised over $1 billion in private capital from investors like Amazon and GE Aerospace, reported net losses in recent years and aims to win FAA approval for its conventional-flight prototype, Alia, by the end of 2026 or early 2027.  Seven Days
  • Spirit Halloween opened two seasonal pop-up stores in Vermont in August to offer costumes for the Halloween season, one in Rutland at 322 US Route 7 South and one in South Burlington at 155 Dorset St.—both stores feature a wide selection including a popular Netflix movie costume.  Burlington Free Press
  • NW Fiberworx promoted Mary Kay Raymond from Network Operations Manager to Executive Director on October 6th—she now leads the group as construction on its community fiber network has begun. The project will expand high-speed internet to underserved towns.  VermontBiz

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday morning, leaders from the Québec-based Odanak First Nation presented a 730-page report that shows Vermont Abenaki chief Don Stevens and others have nearly 100% European ancestry—renewing calls for the state to review its tribal recognition. Local officials and experts disputed the report’s findings—saying census records and historical data do not prove true Native heritage.  Seven Days

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermont farmers are suffering from a prolonged drought as Lazy Dog Farm in Orwell produced only 300 bales of winter feed instead of its usual 800—farmers expect years for pasture recovery, and Sen. Peter Welch toured the farm Friday while working with others to secure a disaster declaration after the government shutdown ends.  NBC5
  • VAAFM is asking Vermont farms to complete a drought impact survey until December 15—farmers should report only new damages after three consecutive seasons of severe weather that brought frost and floods. The survey will help guide recovery resources for Vermont agriculture.  VermontBiz

  • Vermont women's soccer has won four straight games, outscoring opponents 8-2 and clinching a spot in next month's America East tournament after a 3—1 home win over NJIT on Oct 16.
