  • Project Independence is expanding its van service to transport older adults in Chittenden and Rutland counties using a $233,000 state grant + two new electric vans will begin daily trips in January to help families without reliable transportation.  Vermont Public

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bret Michaels & Night Ranger will headline the closing concert at Champlain Valley Fair on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026. Tickets go on sale Thursday, Dec. 11 on the fair website.  NBC5
  • A new list of 30 Vermont-related books is available to help locals find a cozy winter read; the roundup features works by local authors and renowned figures like Bernie Sanders and Bill McKibben, covering mystery, poetry, and cookbooks (ideal for holiday gifts).  Burlington Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UVM's Grossman Student Advisory Committee announced a drive for secondhand professional attire for business students that will run from Dec. 8, 9, 11 and 12 at the Keller Room. The donations will support upcoming semester sales that help students access low-cost, professional clothing.  Burlington Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews were still working on a water main break that occurred around midnight on Dec. 5 off Shelburne Road (on Lakeview Drive near Bay Road), after arriving at 4 a.m., with no fix time announced by the Champlain Water District.  NBC5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Vermont health officials insist newborns receive a hepatitis B shot within 24 hours despite a federal recommendation to delay it, with Health Commissioner Rick Hildebrant warning that the change may cause confusion. Officials aim to prevent liver disease and are preparing to adjust vaccine procurement if needed.  VTDigger
  • The University of Vermont, with Johns Hopkins and the NIH, announced a new vaccine to prevent dengue, a mosquito-spread illness that causes fever and bleeding. The vaccine will first be used in Brazil and a new antiviral will soon help lower dengue risk in high-risk areas.  NBC5
  • VAAFM confirmed that highly pathogenic bird flu was found in a backyard flock of 300 poultry in Orleans County on Saturday, Nov. 29. Officials quarantined and depopulated the birds and set up a control zone while monitoring the owner’s health and awaiting test results in a lab in Iowa.  NBC5
  • New England Vision and Vermont Eye Laser is using virtual reality to help patients preview how their vision may change after surgery and to explore different treatment options. The trial setup in Burlington allows patients to see near, intermediate, and distance ranges (a step toward expanding routine care).  NBC5

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Belleville Bakery now offers its new I Am Proud of Me banana cake on College Street, priced at $9—customers share their proud moments and donations will help bake 50 more cakes for UVM Medical Center oncology patients. The cake went viral online, connecting neighbors through small acts of pride.  NBC5
