COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wood4Good is expanding its firewood delivery to help Vermont families stay warm this winter. Volunteers support the nonprofit’s operations across an area (from the Canadian border to Barre and the Northeast Kingdom) with help from partners like M&T Bank.  NBC5
  • Morgan Brown, a tireless advocate and prolific poet for Vermonters facing housing insecurity, died Tuesday, Dec. 16 after battling colon cancer. A community vigil is planned at the Statehouse on Dec. 22 (his cat Cleo awaits a new home) as friends honor his legacy.  VTDigger

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Zero Gravity Craft Brewery is launching two nonalcoholic beers, Green State Zero and Conehead Zero, ahead of Dry January. The new brews will be available this winter in the brewery's distribution area as it discontinues Rescue Club + focuses on its core beers.  Burlington Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • New Year's Eve fills Burlington with a range of events including the annual Highlight festival that features music, dance and fireworks from Waterfront Park to downtown venues. EDUCATION NEWS

  • During winter break, local students can learn about free tuition at Community College through 802Opportunity and at Vermont State University via Freedom & Unity, along with workforce training funding for skilled trades. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Vermont Air National Guard members were deployed this morning under federal orders, possibly to the Caribbean, with officials saying no briefing on the mission details was given. Lawmakers expressed concern amid heightened operations in Venezuela and vowed to support families during the deployment.  NBC5
  • South Burlington, Vt. — ACA tax credits will end at the start of next year, forcing residents like Kimberly Pashby to cancel coverage that costs $963 a month. The House will vote in January on a three-year extension proposal supported by local leaders.  NBC5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Night skiing kicks off tonight at Bolton Valley Resort as locals hit the slopes from 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday (Bolton president Lindsay DesLauriers said early snowfall has boosted demand).  NBC5
  • The University of Vermont men’s rugby team won its first national championship by beating the University of Chicago 71-5 on Sunday, Dec. 14 in Burlington & ended an undefeated season while celebrating bonds built over four years.  VTDigger
  • UVM named Adrian Dubois as its new men's soccer head coach on Dec. 17 to replace Rob Dow, who left for Penn State. Dubois, a former associate head coach who helped the team reach the NCAA quarterfinals in 2022, signed a four-year deal.  Burlington Free Press
