About this event

// an illustrated presentation by Lunch & Learn Coordinator, and former journal editor, Wayne Senville

Reflecting on a trip to the Alsace-Lorraine region of France, Senville will discuss:

— the growing number of Stolpersteine memorial stones installed in the city of Strasbourg and throughout Europe;

— the Nazis’ murder of 86 Jews at the Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp to serve as specimens in a collection of Jewish skulls and skeletons; and

— why renowned artist Marc Chagall’s dramatic “Peace Window” in the town of Sarrebourg features scenes of Jesus’s life and Crucifixion.

About Our Speaker:

Wayne Senville is the volunteer coordinator of the OZ Lunch & Learn series, and a past member of the OZ Board of Directors. Senville, who is now retired, was publisher and editor of the national Planning Commissioners Journal for 24 years. He also served for 11 years as a member of the Burlington Planning Commission (including three as its Chair); received the citizen planner of the year award from the Northern New England Chapter of the American Planning Association; and was honored with the City of Burlington’s Herb Bloomenthal Award for Community Activism.

Senville has previously given two Lunch & Learn talks at Ohavi Zedek. His first recounted highlights of six weeks’ travel from Maryland to California, during which he met with planners and planning commissioners in 20 cities and towns in 12 states (plus Washington, DC) located along U.S. Route 50. Senville’s second OZ talk focused on the impact and significance of the 1903 Kishinev pogrom, the first pogrom to draw extensive media coverage thanks to newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst and Irish journalist Michael Davitt.

Before or after Senville’s talk consider:

* watching the 45 minute documentary, Stumbling Stones: Remembering the Victims of Naziism (about the Stolpersteine project)

* browsing through the website The Names of the Numbers (about the specially planned murder of 86 Jews sent from Auschwitz to the Struthof concentration camp)

* viewing a beautifully filmed nine minute French video analyzing the Chagall Peace Window / Tree of Life from a Christian perspective (the video is in French, but you can switch YouTube settings to English captions)
