About this event

Dr. Miguel Fernández, Professor of Luso-Hispanic Studies, Middlebury College

Oceans, People, and Waterscapes: The Nicaragua Route in the 19th Century

In the 1850s, thousands of gold-seekers reached California by crossing Nicaragua, by steamship, river boat, lake steamer and a short mule ride. Drawing on fieldwork with marine archaeologists, Professor Fernández tells the story of a waterway that was contested, privatized, and crossed by people from acoss the Americas. The talk invites listeners to see the Gold Rush through a “blue” lens, asking who controlled the water, whose stories survive, and what the sea keeps.
